In just a few years, rich media, the explosion of social networking, and Web 2.0 technologies have radically modified the behaviour of Internet users and their consumption model. e-marketing applications (tracking and delivery platforms: adserver, media delivery, streaming, gaming, routing platforms, ECRM, etc.) must not only constantly innovate to propose new delivery and targeting functionality, but must also be able to cope with extreme demands whilst maintaining constant quality of service and availability. In recent years, the development of communication technologies has allowed a new era of computer architecture to emerge, no longer based on the centralization of resources on a site, but on the distribution of these resources in an extended network. This type of architecture allows it to satisfy the requirements of e-marketing applications that a conventional architecture could not easily handle.
Designed by R, R-DDN (R – Distributed Delivery Network) is a distributed network based on a cloud architecture designed to supply the capacity, scalability and reliability required for e-marketing applications in SaaS mode.
Performance, reliability and scalability are essential for the operation of a SaaS application. R-DDN is a distributed network consisting of various POPs (Points of Presence) that are distributed in different geographical areas and are interconnected. Each POP has its own resources (servers, storage, etc.) and provides a set of basic services to the applications that operate in R-DDN. A POP operates as an autonomous brick able to collaborate with all the other POPs and able to be added to or removed from an R-DDN running hot. This architecture allows applications running in R-DDN to be executed natively on several POPs, with R-DDN handling the distribution of demands (queries, etc.) in the network, taking into account the availability of the resources available to it. An important characteristic of R-DDN is that it directs visitors intelligently and in real time towards the best diffusion point, taking into account the availability status of the resources of each POP and the Round Trip Time between the various POPs and Internet users. R-DDN can also direct each visitor in real time towards the best POP and guarantee continuity of service.
High availability consists of ensuring that the loss of a machine cannot cause partial or total shutdown of the service. e-marketing applications are amongst the applications that do not tolerate service interruptions, such as the interruption of delivery or tracking for an affiliation platform. R-DDN was designed to integrate high availability natively. Firstly, the strategic functions, whether functions related to service, such as delivery or routing, or functions related to the architecture itself, are replicated on the various POPs. Next, the intelligent distribution of visitors amongst the various POPs allows R-DDN to cope with the most extreme situations, from simple unavailability of a machine to the total or partial loss of a POP. R-DDN thus allows R application diffusion systems to achieve an annual availability rate of more than 99.98%, guaranteeing consistent quality of service for our clients.
The scalability of an infrastructure or application describes its ability to increase its processing capacity to cope with new demands, whilst maintaining constant quality of service. By distributing queries transparently between all of its machines, R-DDN can guarantee that a demand will always be met by the most available server offering the best response quality for the end user, even in the event of extreme demand on the entire network.
The R-DDN platform was designed to accept new e-advertising formats incorporating interactive advertisements, videos, animations, downloading of applications, games, or microsites. When a user views an advertising element (video, banner, etc.), accesses a microsite or downloads an application, he/she is automatically directed to the most appropriate and nearest server, i.e. the server able to provide the requested element in the shortest time, taking into account any slow-downs and traffic jams in the network. R-DDN thus offers optimum performance and reliability to reduce the cost of delivery and guarantee the end user’s total satisfaction, irrespective of the number of visitors and the type of element delivered.
R is developing a sustained research and development and technology watch activity to give R applications a head start.
